Siargao is an island within the jurisdiction of Surigao Del Norte province. It is famously known for being the surfing capital of the Philippines. It is a place where adventure-seekers from all around the globe like to ride the waves. Unlike the fully modernized white beach strip of Boracay, Siargao is on the simpler side with many untouched areas and a very modest lifestyle for locals. Although that is the case, it does not mean that there aren’t tons of things that can be enjoyed in the island.

I came to Siargao with a bunch of friends on a three-day-three-night stay. I will be sharing all our activities on each day we spent there, including details about the places we went to and how my experiences were in those places. Some important things to note if you’re planning to visit there is that the language they speak is mostly Surigaonon (but they can speak and understand English, Tagalog, and Cebuano pretty well), and although there are some establishments that accept card payments, cash is still the most preferred mode of payment.

Day 1: We stayed at Jing’s Place, which cost 2,000php per night with AC. The first thing we did after checking in was to rent motorbikes for 300php for the whole day. We, then, went to Cloud 9 for sightseeing on the said motorbikes. Aside from being widely known for its great waves, Cloud 9 also has a perfectly instagrammable boardwalk that is always on the to-visit list for anyone who goes to Siargao. After that, we grabbed dinner and had a night out at a place called Harana Bar and Rumbar. We didn’t do much on the first day since we felt a little jetlagged from our early morning flight.

Day 2: We went island hopping to Naked Island and Daku Island. When you see Naked Island, you will immediately understand how it got its name, for it is a small island that has nothing but fine white sand on it, perfect for getting a tan and for swimming. Daku Island is the largest in the trio that includes Naked Island and Guyam Island. Daku Island is where we ate lunch. After lunch, we went surfing at Pacifico. Pacifico is a rather underrated surfing spot in Siargao, since most people are focused on Cloud 9 only. After surfing, we dipped in the Magpupungko Rock Pool, a natural rock pool on the east coast of the island that is best visited during low tide. We concluded our second day with a fun drinking session at Bravo Beach Club.
Day 3: We spent most of our third day surfing at a place the local fondly called the Secret Spot since it is a place that seldom gets any attention compared to all the other attractions in the island. It should definitely be on everyone’s list when visiting Siargao though, for it has both a beach and a mangrove forest. You can rent a small boat and explore the floating foliage there; the ultimate bonus is the place being less crowded than the others because of how “secret” it is. We ended our third and final day in Siargao with dinner at the Kermit Surf Resort and Restaurant and skipped drinks since our flights were early the following morning.

In the recent years, Siargao has been proving itself worthy of the tourist attention it has been getting since its blowup in the 2010s.Personally, what I love about the place is how connected to nature it makes me feel, but not without the side of city-like partying. I also consider it a huge advantage that it’s not as commercialized as other tourist destinations in the Philippines. All in all, I can definitely see myself going back to Siargao, and maybe this time, for a longer stay.
